The video discusses some of the main reasons for using power modules, includes an introduction of ISL8203M power module, and presents Intersil’s product portfolio of power module solutions, while demonstrating the benefits of the products.

Using only nine external components, Intersil’s ISL8203M power module solution saves hundreds of man-hours in design, procurement, PCB board layout, and manufacturing. It requires few external components, and has a small package size allowing for high density power design. The patented packaging allows for high load currents without heat sinks or fans. Additional advantages of the ISL8203M include pick and place manufacturability, the ability to parallel devices in a small PCB board area, and high efficiency to minimize heat.

The ISL8203M is a complete DC to DC step down power supply solution encapsulated in a single package. Operating from the industry standard 5V or 3.3V power rails, it is capable of providing up to 6A of continuous output current as a single channel point of load, or up to 3A per channel as a dual channel point of load making it a very versatile solution. The ISL8203M supports output voltages as low as 0.8V and offers up to 95% efficiency on several conversion ratios. Furthermore, a fast 1.1MHz control loop architecture allows a fast transient response to any output current load step. Finally, the thermally enhanced QFN is only 9mm x 6.5mm x 1.83mm.

The ISL8203MEVAL2Z evaluation board is designed to demonstrate the performance of the ISL8203M. The board is by default set up to demonstrate two 3A outputs independently, and can also be easily set up for current sharing 6A by changing placeholder resistors.

Intersil’s ISL8203M power module reduces complexity and eliminates the need for specialized power design knowledge, thus reducing time to market.

The Altech DC-UPS system is built to optimize power management. The available power is automatically allocated between load and battery; supplying power to the load is the first priority. For high inrush applications the charging power will reroute automatically to the load. In this case the maximum available current on the load output is two times the value of the device rated current.

The Battery Care concept is based on algorithms that achieve rapid and automatic charging, battery optimization during charging time, flat batteries recovery and real time diagnostics. The Real Time Auto-diagnostic system, monitors battery faults, sulfated battery, short circuit battery elements, reverse polarity connection, and battery disconnect. These conditions are detected and identified by the number of blinks of the diagnosis LED.

The Altech DC-UPS system is designed to charge and monitor all battery types, by selecting the battery type via jumpers. The pre-defined curves include Open Lead Acid, Sealed Lead Acid, Gel, and Ni-Cd (optional) battery types. The charging curves are programmed to automatically switch between Recovery Charge, Boost charge and Trickle charge. CUI Inc. has introduced a high performance series of 100W AC-DC power supplies in an encapsulated board-mount package which is just 17mm high. Baseplate (conduction)-cooled, the new VBM-100 series is suitable for applications in which space limitations or noise restrictions make the use of fans for cooling undesirable.

These new modules provide designers power factor correction (PFC), phase-shifted full-bridge plus secondary side synchronous rectification (PSFB+SR) power train discrete device analysis, and the matrix of device combinations associated with these topologies.

From user-specified electrical and mechanical specifications, the new modules provide an optimum combination of power discrete semiconductors, transformer and inductor design values, as well as a bill of material (BOM). It also provides a dashboard view of the converter’s system and device power loss, device junction temperature, and further component fine-tuning over the operating conditions. As with other PSW modules, designers using the tools can accept default recommended values, or spend time optimizing the important details to their unique design needs. They can get quick, accurate estimates on design performance, and refine design choices as they go. The tools also allow them to spend the time to perform detailed simulation analysis and learn the insights of how their design and its hardware prototype will work with higher degree of confidence.

The Power Train Discrete Module consists of a phase-shifted full bridge with secondary side synchronous rectification (PSFB+SR) module and power factor correction (PFC) module.

These new modules save time when evaluating various combinations. Rather than spending the typical one-week-per-combination bench testing time, PSW can simulate each combination quickly and accurately – typically ~2 percent difference over line and load conditions between tool and hardware measurement results.

When a design is complete, PSW creates a BOM which can be sent to their procurement department or instantly procure the components online, saving time on documentation or sourcing parts elsewhere. Additionally, they can save their design for future reference or pass the design on to other team members.
