Future Electronics Releases etech ALERT Featuring the Power of Two from Renesas and Micrium

Montreal, Canada – November 14, 2014 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, recently released an etech ALERT featuring the Power of Two, from Renesas and Micrium.

Micrium RTOS and middleware modules, bundled with Renesas MCUs, let designers bypass the time consuming, expensive and often tedious process of writing infrastructure code – freeing time and efforts to perfect designs and go on to create new ones.

“The Power of Two” program is now an even more attractive HW/SW embedded system development solution. With the addition of IPv6, “The Power of Two” now supports Internet of Things (IoT) applications, enabling participants to maximize their RX and RL78 performance for machine-to-machine and cloud communication.

The Renesas RX family is equipped with a new-generation core, and can respond to the ever increasing challenges and demands on the MCUs of today and tomorrow. Even higher performance, greater code efficiency, lower power consumption, and more integration have been achieved, while providing legacy, enhanced and new peripheral functions for many applications.

The Renesas RL78 family combines advanced features from both the 78K and R8C families to deliver low power consumption and high performance. RL78 is designed specifically for ultra low power applications, enabling customers to build compact and energy-efficient systems at lower cost.

Future Electronics Launches Video on Using RTOS with MCU

Montreal, Canada – May 21, 2014 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has produced a how-to video showing the reasons for using an RTOS, Real Time Operating System, with an MCU.

The video discusses the benefits of using a RTOS or real time operating system with a microcontroller in embedded applications. An RTOS is an operating system which is optimized in order to be used in embedded and real time applications. A main advantage of an RTOS is that it ensures a timely and deterministic response to internal events or external events.

As more designs are migrating to 32-bit microcontrollers and applications that are being developed grow in complexity, using an RTOS can become beneficial for many reasons, including abstract out timing information, maintainability, clean inter-task communication interfaces, easier testing, code reusability across different projects, improved efficiency of CPU resources, flexible interrupt handling, and easier control over peripherals.

Due to the modularity of Micrium, users can choose only the components that are required for their application. Micrium’s RTOS uses the μC/OS-III which is a scalable and ROMable preemptive real-time kernel that can manage an unlimited amount of tasks.

The μC/OS-III is a third-generation kernel that offers resource management, synchronization and inter-task communication. A big advantage of the μC/OS-III is that it also offers several unique features that are not available in other real-time kernels.

Micrium’s μC/OS-III can be used with the most popular microcontrollers on the market, and comprehensive and detailed books that delve into the operation of real-time kernels are offered by Micrium with practical and working applications with hands-on working projects to allow programmers and developers to get their application running quickly.

Real-time operating systems can be useful in many applications. A good example is in the deployment of airbags during a traffic accident. In this case, a small timing error, whether the airbag is deployed too late or even too early, can cause serious and irreversible bodily injury. An RTOS is extremely useful here as it will ensure that all timing requirements are met.

In general, real-time operating systems are designed for event response applications and closed-loop control applications.

Applications that run for long periods of time can also benefit from an RTOS due to its reliability in situations where down-time is considered unacceptable or costly.

The μC/OS-III is the newest RTOS, designed to save time on embedded system projects. In addition to the features inherent in μC/OS-II, μC/OS-III also manages an unlimited number of application tasks, and features an interrupt disable time of near zero.
