Future Electronics Offers Commutation Encoders from CUI Inc to Reduce BLDC Motor Assembly Time

CUI Inc’s next-generation modular encoder series generates standard U/V/W commutation signals for vectoring current to brushless motors.

Positional information for the AMT31 series is generated using CUI’s patented, capacitive code generation system coupled with a proprietary ASIC. The technology makes the encoder ideal for use in brushless dc motor applications subject to vibration and contaminants – such as dust, dirt and oil – that typically stop optical encoders from working effectively. The AMT31 series also delivers exceptional accuracy figures of +/- 12 arcmin (±0.2 mechanical degrees).

Thanks to the digital nature of the encoder design, the AMT31 series incorporates a One Touch Zero™ feature, allowing for significant time saving during the motor installation process. Installing a commutation optical encoder onto a brushless dc motor (BLDC) can be an iterative and time-consuming process as the optical disk must be physically and precisely rotated to align with the correct motor windings. Once aligned, the assembly must then be checked via back EMF to ensure mounting accuracy and this process can take upwards of 15 minutes per motor. The AMT, being ASIC and MCU based, reduces this time consuming process to a few seconds via the One Touch Zero feature, saving time and cost during the manufacturing process.

Commutation output can accommodate brushless motors with 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 20 pole pairs, selectable from the factory or via CUI’s AMT Viewpoint™ graphical user interface. The AMT31 also offers supplementary incremental A, B, and Z channels for various servo positioning and startup sequences. 20 programmable resolutions are available with a range of 48 to 4096 PPR, again adjustable at the factory or via CUI’s AMT Viewpoint. Future Electronics Announces the S Series Rugged Toggle Switches from NKK Switches

For design engineers, every harsh environment presents its own set of challenges stemming from a host of factors, such as extreme temperatures, water, chemicals, dust, oil and other types of contaminants. Rated at IP67 of IEC60529 standards, NKK’s S Series gives design engineers the ability to incorporate a reliable toggle switch into designs that can be used in a variety of rugged environments. The standard bat-style actuator models also feature an optional splash-proof boot to cover the base of the actuator for additional sealing to guard against dangerous contamination.

All S Series switches feature solder lug terminals and are panel mount with 12mm threaded bushings. The series’ mounting design conforms to standard panel cut outs with electrical capacities ranging from 15A to 20A at 125VAC, 6A to 10A at 250VAC and 15A to 20A at 30VDC.

The S Series is available with or without locking levers. The 17.5mm toggle switches feature many circuit configurations, including SPST, SPDT, DPST and DPDT, with a choice of momentary or maintained circuits. Locking levers can be specified for maintained circuits, and standard hardware includes a hex nut, lock washer and an O-ring for panel sealing. In addition, engineers have the option of specifying 0.250” quick connect terminals and ON/OFF inscribed plates.

Future Electronics Helps Customers Select the Right TVS Diodes from Vishay

Montreal, Canada – March 21, 2014Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, is offering customers assistance in choosing the right Vishay TVS diodes for their applications.

TVS diodes are avalanche breakdown diodes made of silicon. The avalanche breakdown voltage is depending on the design of the diode (doping profile) and the temperature of the p/n-junction. But it is independent from the size of the diode. Any current passing the diode causes thermal power which heats the diode up. The avalanche breakdown voltage rises with a temperature coefficient of round about ~ 0.1 %/K. This is the major reason for the increasing clamping voltage during a surge pulse. At higher currents the low series resistance causes an additional voltage drop and contribution to the so-called “clamping voltage” of the diode.

A simple diode consists of a “p-doped” and a “n-doped” silicon layer. The junction between both is call “p/n junction”. Such a diode passes a “forward current” from the p-layer, called “anode”, to the n-layer called “cathode” with just a low “forward voltage” drop. In the opposite direction, the “reverse direction”, the p/n-junction is blocked, so that just a very low “leakage current” can flow from the cathode to the anode. In the moment when the applied “reverse voltage” generates a critical electric field in the p/n-junction an “avalanche breakdown” starts. Diodes with just one p/n-junction are “uni-directional avalanche breakdown diodes” called “uni-directional diodes.”

Diodes with three layers, such as p/n/p or n/p/n, have two p/n-junctions so that an avalanche breakdown can occur in both directions. Such diodes are “bi-directional avalanche breakdown diodes” called “bi-directional diodes.”

PAR® stands for Passivated Anisotropic Rectifier technology. Diodes made with this technology offer high-reliability with maximum junction temperature (Tj) up to 185 °C, and are the first choice for automotive applications.

During operation, when a high current passes the p/n-junction, the diode gets hot. Once the diode gets too hot the silicon in the p/n-junction can melt (electrical overstress (EOS)) and the resistivity drops down. The diode gets usually “shorted.” But if the energy is just high enough the diode can also be cracked or exploded. This can cause an “open.”

The rugged and compact PQMC3-S and PQM3-M families increase total efficiency across the entire load curve and give improved performance at light and no loads. The converters are ideal for battery-powered applications where power draw under these conditions are a concern.

Rated at 3 W, the PQMC3-S series is available with input ranges of 4.5~9, 9~18, 18~36, or 36~75 Vdc while the PQM3-M series offers input ranges of 9~18, 18~36, or 36~75 Vdc.
