Future Electronics Features Design Note on Replacing Reed Switch with Solid State Alternatives

Montreal, Canada – June 26, 2015 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, recently released their June 2015 issue of FTM, Future Technology Magazine, featuring a Design Note by Crocus Technology, on how to replace a traditional reed switch with a more robust solid state alternative.

Magnetic reed switches are simple switches which change state in the presence of a magnetic field. Reed switches are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and configurations. Designers commonly specify Normally Open (NO), Normally Closed (NC), Single Pole Single Throw (SPST) and Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) versions, and others are also available.

Unfortunately, reed switches have an important and familiar failing; they readily break. This is because the casing of the reed switch’s body is normally made of glass; it is very fragile. A more robust alternative to the traditional reed switch is the solid state magnetic switch.

In many applications, replacing a reed switch with a magnetic switch is simple and straightforward, and it offers several advantages over the reed switch, including reliability, speed, size, and cost.

Regarding reliability, a magnetic switch is much more robust than a reed switch, because it is a solid state device. It has no moving parts, and its plastic package, unlike the reed switch’s glass package, is tolerant of shock and vibration.

In terms of speed, the frequency response of a magnetic switch is much higher than a reed switch and can be measured in nanoseconds. Concerning size, a magnetic switch is much smaller than even the smallest reed switch. For instance, the CTSR420C-IS2 from Crocus Technology is housed in a 3 x 2.6mm SOT23 package.

In comparing cost, magnetic switches have lower manufacturing costs, and therefore are cheaper to buy than reed switches.

Future Electronics Announces Availability of NXP’s LPC18S10 Series

The LPC18S5x/S3x are ARM Cortex-M3 based microcontrollers for embedded applications. Intersil’s ISL8117 Synchronous Step-down PWM Controller is the first 60V synchronous buck controller able to bypass the intermediate step-down conversion stage traditionally employed in industrial applications. The ISL8117 synchronous step-down PWM controller’s low duty cycle (40ns minimum on time) enables the direct step-down conversion from 48V to a 1V point-of-load. This technical achievement makes it possible for designers to reduce system complexity and solution cost in industrial, factory automation, medical and communications infrastructure applications.

In high voltage applications where a lower output voltage is required, designers have traditionally relied on modules that increase system cost, or two stage DC/DC solutions that increase solution footprint and complexity. The ISL8117 controller offers a cost-effective and reliable alternative for applications where Vout to Vin ratio is low. The ISL8117 uses valley current mode modulation with adaptive slope compensation to enable stable operation for a wide range of Vin and Vout combinations, with no external compensation required. System designers can also use the ISL8117’s adjustable frequency up to 2MHz to optimize power supply cost, size and efficiency.

The innovative ISL8117 reduces solution footprint and simplifies design without compromising performance. Default design values for commonly used functions and the ISL8117’s wide Vin and Vout reduce the number of external components compared to competing solutions. With the ISL8117, engineers can design a complete DC/DC buck conversion solution with only 10 components, including MOSFETs and passives, and achieve up to 98% conversion efficiency with 1.5% output voltage accuracy. The ISL8117’s low pin count and layout friendly pin architecture also minimizes the number of overlapping traces, further improving power supply performance.
