It has also been designed in order to allow a maximum amount of design flexibility through its hardware compatibility with Arduino shields.

The Pioneer Kit contains everything needed to get up and running with developing and evaluating Bluetooth Low Energy applications. SiC provides a number of key advantages over silicon, including significantly higher efficiency in high voltage applications. Improving performance and reducing device cost while shrinking packaging size is fundamental to virtually all semiconductor products. For power devices, improved performance is measured by increased efficiency and power density, higher power handling capability, and wider operating temperature range. Such improvements depend largely on the characteristics of the power components used, such as low switching and conduction losses, high switching frequency, stable electrical characteristics over a wide temperature range, high operating temperature, and high blocking voltage.

However, as silicon power components approach their theoretical limits, compound semiconductor materials such as silicon carbide are emerging as viable alternatives due to their superior characteristics – delivering a level of performance not possible with their silicon counterparts. This is particularly true for the most basic components in power electronics: diodes and transistors. SiC Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) and transistors have been available for more than a decade but were not commercially viable until only recently.

SiC is a compound semiconductor comprised of silicon (Si) and carbon (C). SiC provides a number of advantages over Si, including: 10x the Dielectric Breakdown Field Strength (0.3 MV/cm vs 3 MV/cm), 3x the Energy Bandgap (1.12eV vs 3.26eV), and 3x the Thermal Conductivity (1.5 W/cm°C vs 4.9 W/cm°C).

As a result, SiC offers lower resistivity, higher breakdown voltages (600V+), and can operate at higher temperatures (up to +175°C), making it ideal for power devices in PFC circuits and secondary bridge rectifiers in switch mode power supplies. Other applications include air conditioners, solar power conditioners, EV chargers and industrial equipment. SiC Diodes SiC-SBDs allow system designers to improve efficiency and increase switching frequency to lower the cost and size of passives and heat sinks in high voltage (600V+) applications that far exceed the upper limit of Si-SBDs.

ROHM offers a wide range of power SiC SBDs, MOSFETs, and modules optimized for voltages up to 1,200V, and is currently developing 1700V products.

Future Electronics Features AS5048 Series from ams in January Issue of FTM

Montreal, Canada – January 19, 2015 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has announced that the company will feature the AS5048 series of magnetic rotary encoders from ams in its January issue of Future Technology Magazine (FTM), a monthly publication addressing the latest news and products in the electronics industry.

ams has a patented design which provides the greatest rejection of stray fields possible, effectively canceling the “noise” introduced by any but the field lines from the intentional magnet. First, the devices are optimized to reject field components that are not perpendicular to the surface. By comparing multiple readings and applying what amounts to an analysis of sums and differences, ams’ algorithm can differentiate true signal from stray components entering at oblique angles. Additionally, their technique allows them to compensate for small variations in the magnet’s placement, either off-axis or eccentric to the plane of rotation, and this helps ease manufacturing tolerance worries.

As for magnet selection, ams provides extensive help in choosing the proper magnet size, field strength, and in setting the optimum gap between magnet and sensor. ams has further simplified this by partnering with a magnet company that produces a line of magnets designed specifically for use with the various ams encoders. There is no guesswork in the system; engineers can design confidently, knowing that the all critical magnetic components are already identified and available.

The AS5048 has 14-bit resolution, meaning it can resolve an incredible 0.02 degrees (other devices offer 8-, 10-, or 12-bit resolution). Depending on the version ordered, designated by an A or B extension, you can get either an I2C or SPI interface. Both versions of this chip have a PWM output, as well. Another detail is that these rotary encoders are specified as being either absolute or incremental types. This means that they either have an internal “zero” reference upon which to base their output, or else the output is always relative to the last position, effectively meaning they have no “memory” of where “home” is. Different applications will require one or the other.

The AS5048 is an absolute type of rotary encoder. ams also offers other devices optimized for off-axis placement for applications where on-axis placement is mechanically prohibited.

The Generation 8 (Gen8) 1200V IGBT platform utilizes IR’s latest generation trench gate field stop technology delivered in industry standard TO-247 packages to offer best in class performance for industrial and energy saving applications. Generation 8 IGBT has been specifically tailored for heavy industrial applications, where ruggedness and reliability are key requirements. At lower switching frequencies, conduction losses in the IGBT dominate the total power losses. With very low VCE(ON), Generation 8 IGBT offers high performance in motor drive applications with reduced overall losses.

The novel Gen8 devices are available with current ratings from 8A up to 60A with a typical VCE(ON) of 1.7V and a short circuit rating of 10µs to reduce power dissipation, resulting in increased power density and superior robustness. The new technology offers softer turn-off characteristics ideal for motor drive applications, minimizing dv/dt to reduce EMI and over-voltage, increasing reliability and ruggedness. A narrow distribution of parameters offers excellent current sharing when paralleling multiple IGBTs. The thin wafer technology delivers improved thermal resistance and maximum junction temperature up to +175ºC.
