Future Electronics Offers Immediate Availability of XPT IGBT Products from IXYS

Montreal, Canada – May 16, 2013 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, announces immediate availability of XPT IGBT products from IXYS Corporation.

IXYS has expanded its benchmark XPT IGBT product line with new 600 V discrete additions. These new discrete IGBTs are tailored to address market demands for highly rugged, low loss semiconductor devices that offer the ability to be easily configured in parallel. The featured devices demonstrate superior performance and exceptional ruggedness in applications such as power inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, motor drives, switch mode power supplies, power factor correction circuits, battery chargers, welding machines, and lamp ballasts.

Initial release of these new discrete XPT IGBTs includes devices that are available with current ratings from 100 to 210 A. Developed using IXYS’ extreme light PT (XPT) design platform, these new devices feature excellent electrical characteristics, which include low typical Vcesat as low as 1.8 V, low typical current fall times (tfi as low as 42n s), and low typical turn-off energy per pulse values (Eoff as low as 0.33 mJ). In addition, they demonstrate exceptional ruggedness during switching and under short circuit conditions, establishing a new benchmark in device ruggedness. This is achieved through a 10 us short circuit safe operating area (SCSOA), dynamic avalanche ratings, and a square reverse bias safe operating area (RBSOA) rated up to the device’s blocking voltage. Furthermore, these devices feature an extended forward bias safe operating area (FBSOA), allowing for a “wider operating window” as dictated by the power limitations of the device, resulting in improved ruggedness and reliability.

IXYS XPT IGBTs are available in two distinctive speed classifications: the B3 and C3 Classes respectively. The B3 and C3 speed classifications offer designers a more flexible approach to device selection regarding critical requirements such as switching frequency, saturation voltage, and cost. B3-Class devices feature an excellent balance between conduction and switching losses and are optimized for hard switching frequencies from 10 to 30 kHz. C3-Class devices are optimized for minimal switching losses and are recommended for hard switching frequencies from 20 to 60 kHz.

High-performance Wandboard community embedded development board now available from Future Electronics

Egham, UK – May 15, 2013 – Future Electronics today announced that it is stocking the Wandboard (www.wandboard.org), a community-sponsored embedded development board offering a rich set of multimedia features. Customers can buy the Wandboard at the Future Electronics Web Store, or through any branch of Future Electronics.

The Wandboard, which is based on Freescale Semiconductor’s powerful i.MX 6 series multimedia processor, is available in single-core (Wandboard Solo) and dual-core (Wandboard Dual) versions. The Wandboard Solo is priced at $73.95 and the Wandboard Dual at $93.95.

The Wandboard is the product of a not-for-profit initiative that, like the Raspberry Pi, is aimed at providing a low-cost embedded development platform for students and hobbyists, as well as professional users.

The advantage of the Wandboard, however, is that it has adopted a system-on-module architecture, using the open EDM standard to connect the module to a simple carrier interface board that provides common system functions such as power and communications interfaces.

This means that developers who need different hardware resources from those available in an off-the-shelf Wandboard module can easily and cheaply modify it, and create a new carrier board to fit their specific application. In doing so, they can draw on the wide choice of open-source community software already available, and so reduce the risk normally associated with customisation and development engineering.

The Wandboard provides a high-performance hardware platform, capable of running complex applications and demanding functions such as rendering high-definition graphics. The Freescale i.MX 6 series processor, which features ARM Cortex-A9 technology, supports Ubuntu and Android™, and the Wandboard itself supports mainline u-boot and Linux®.

The board offers up to 1GB of DRAM, an SPDIF interface and analog audio outputs, an HDMI graphics connector, camera interface, two SD card slots, USB capability, Gigabit Ethernet and (on the Wandboard Dual only) on-board 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth. The boards also offer a wide range of expansion pin headers.

The quasi-resonant operation ensures high efficiency, and a novel primary side control method eliminates the need for secondary side feedback circuitry, biasing and an optocoupler, saving board space and additional costs. Wide VCC input range and low start-up current requirements simplify biasing and enable fast start-up and allow one design to support more than a 2:1 range of LEDs with a single transformer, whether the design requires an isolated flyback or non-isolated buck-boost topology.

A gyroscope, also known as gyro sensor, angular rate sensor or angular velocity sensor is a device that can sense angular velocity. Gyro sensors can sense rotational motion and changes in orientation and therefore augment motion.

Vibration gyro sensors can sense angular velocity due to the Coriolis force which is applied to a vibrating element. This motion produces a potential difference from which angular velocity is sensed. The angular velocity is converted into an electrical signal output.

Gyroscopes are used in gaming and virtual-reality input devices. They can also be found in angle sensing applications such as dead reckoning and GPS navigation systems. Another application is to sense and correct the vibration produced by external factors such as in robotics or camera-shake correction.
