How to Select the Right Programmable System-on-Chip Board (PSOC): A New Future Electronics Video

Montreal, Canada – March 13, 2013 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has announced the addition of another how-to video in its series on selecting the best electronic components for various applications. “How to Select the Right Programmable System-on-Chip Board For Your Application” has been launched along with many other new and helpful tutorials on the company’s YouTube channel.

PSoC is a family of integrated circuits offered by Cypress Semiconductor. PSoC chips include a CPU as well as mixed-signal arrays of configurable integrated analog and digital peripherals. PSoC is similar to a microcontroller where code is executed in order to interact with the user-specified peripheral functions. A PSoC integrated circuit contains a core, configurable digital and analog blocks, programmable routing and interconnect. The differences of PSoC in regard to microcontrollers are the configurable blocks in PSoCs. PSoC devices include up to 12 analog and 16 digital blocks, depending on the device.

PSoC boards can be used in emulator applications such as data acquisition and regulation under PC control, LED lighting, switches and sensors. PSoC boards can also be used in order to support applications in electronic devices including electrical toothbrushes, “smart” shoes and TiVo set-top boxes. PSoCs are also found in touch-sensitive applications such as scroll wheels on portable music players. In medical devices, to achieve portability and high functionality at a low cost, a PSoC can be configured in order to serve several different functions and create a medical device on chip.

There are several other application types for PSoC boards. These range from analog and mixed signal control applications to LCD, interfacing, wireless and USB solutions. Other applications are metering, embedded control, power management and sensing. Adapter and Expansion/Daughter boards are also available to help programmers and developers evaluate full performance capabilities before production.
