Fairchild Semiconductor’s New FOD8316 Smart Gate Driver Optocoupler Available at Future Electronics

Montreal, Canada – January 23, 2013 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, is pleased to announce immediate availability of the new FOD Smart Gate Driver Optocoupler from Fairchild Semiconductor, offering isolated gate driving, fault sensing, and best in class noise immunity.

The FOD8316 is an advanced 2.5A Output Current IGBT Drive Optocoupler offering the critical protection necessary for preventing fault conditions that would otherwise lead to the destructive thermal runaway of IGBTs. Pin-for-pin compatible with current solutions, the FOD8316 consists of an integrated gate drive optocoupler featuring low RDS(ON) CMOS transistors to drive the IGBT from rail-to-rail, and high speed isolated feedback circuitry for fault sensing. It is ideally suited for driving fast-switching power IGBTs and MOSFETs. Common applications include motor drives, industrial inverters, solar power inverters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and induction heating, among others.

The FOD8316 offers best in class noise immunity as a result of its proprietary Optoplanar® coplanar packaging technology. This Optoplanar technology ensures safe insulation thickness of more than 0.4mm in attaining reliable high voltage isolation, certified by UL1577 and DIN EN/IEC60747-5-5 standards.

The FOD8316 provides short circuit protection by means of having desaturation detection circuits. Desaturation detection ensures the protection of the IGBT at short circuit by monitoring the collector emitter voltage in the half bridge. The FOD8316 is also designed with under-voltage detection, to prevent insufficient gate voltage to the IGBT. Additional benefits include its high speed (500nsec propagation delay time), low power dissipation, and soft IGBT turn-off.
