An accelerometer measures proper acceleration, associated with the weight of a test mass. In semiconductor devices, piezoresistive, piezoelectric and capacitive components are commonly used in order to convert mechanical motion into an electrical signal. Global Availability marks Industry’s First Wafer-Level Magnetics Based Integrated Power ICs

MONTREAL, Canada and HAMPTON, NJ — November 29, 2012 — Enpirion, the leader of integrated power IC solutions, and Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components announce the availability of products based on the world’s first wafer level magnetics (WLM) technology. In partnering with Future Electronics, Enpirion has made available these devices worldwide, which are the lowest cost PowerSoC DC-DC converters in the world enabled by bringing the economics of silicon wafers in place of traditional discrete bulk magnetics.

The newly released EL700 family is a low power fully-integrated PowerSoC family based on electroplated wafer level magnetics. The EL700 family delivers low cost, low power point-of-load DC-DC conversion at a record-breaking 18 MHz switching frequency for ultra-low ripple. Compared to an LDO, the EL711 and EL712 improve power conversion efficiency up to 40 points, with efficiency of up to 90 percent. The 1A and 1.5A switch-mode DC-DC converters support an input voltage range of 2.65V to 5.5V and are true Enpirion PowerSoCs: In a form factor of only 42mm², they monolithically integrate MOSFET switches, controller circuits, compensation, and a tiny silicon inductor. With an ultra-fast transient response, the EL711 meets the demand of high performance digital ASICs, DSPs, and FPGA cores found in a broad range of applications.”

The EL711 and EL712 are available exclusively from Future Electronics.  The EL711 is priced at $0.57 in volumes of 1k units.  The EL712 will be available in Q1-13.  Future Electronics also offers evaluation boards for Enpirion products.

How to Select the Right UART for Your Application: A new Video by Future Electronics

Montreal, Canada – November 12, 2012 – Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has added another how-to video to its series about selecting the best electronic components for various applications. “How to Select the Right UART for Your Application” is now available along with many other helpful video tutorials on the company’s YouTube channel.

As with all of the company’s how-to videos, the tutorial begins by answering the most basic questions first, including “What is a UART?” A UART, or Universal Asynchronous Receiver / Transmitter, is an integrated circuit used for serial communications, which contains a receiver and a transmitter. A UART takes bytes of data and transmits the individual bits in a sequential fashion. At the destination, a second UART re-assembles the bits into complete bytes. A dual UART, or DUART, combines two UARTs into a single chip.

There are several good reasons to choose UARTs to translate data between parallel and serial forms. UARTS can have FIFO buffers with a high number of bytes. For example, for UARTs with 16 byte FIFO buffers, the UART can receive up to 14 bytes (or send 16 bytes) before it has to interrupt the CPU. Not only can it wait for more bytes, but the CPU can then transfer all (14 to 16) bytes at a time. The CPU receives fewer interrupts, and is free to do other things. UARTs can be used with several interface circuit types, are easy interface to PCs, and can cover a wide range of distance and speed capabilities with off-the-shelf hardware.

Universal Asynchronous Receiver / Transmitters are commonly included in microcontrollers and are designed to be used for several applications. UARTs are used for devices including GPS units, modems, wireless communications and Bluetooth modules, amongst many other applications.

Step-by-step visuals and narration assist the viewer in understanding the basics of UARTS, UART applications, and then demonstrate the process of finding the right products on the company’s website in real time, showing how quick and easy it is to navigate the site, filtering by characteristics such as data rate, number of functions, interface circuit type, nominal supply voltage, manufacturer and more, and find the best parts for any application.

The EHP is a modular energy harvesting development tool that allows for evaluation of typical renewable energy sources. The Renesas configuration demonstrates the RL78/I1A being used to control a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) circuit to optimize the efficiency of a solar panel charging an array of super capacitors for energy storage. The super capacitor array powers an ultra low power application module using an RL78/I1A to drive a Smart Pixel Memory Display and keypad. All of the power generation and consumption on the board is monitored and controlled in real-time by an RL78/G14, which calculates and then displays the power levels using a Future designed PC based GUI tool.
